The resident bottlenose dolphins of the Gulf of Olbia have been catalogued by dorsal-fin photo identification for more than two decades, and a portion of the population is sighted here year-round rather than seasonally. That permanence is the quiet fact behind everything that happens off Golfo Aranci. The town sits on the eastern tip of a promontory that closes the gulf's northern flank, a working fishing and ferry village long before it became a summer address. Its name — the orange gulf — is a linguistic misreading: the Gallurese ghjlfu di li ranci, gulf of the crabs, was smoothed into aranci by mainland cartographers. No orange groves were ever planted here. The geology explains the water. Golfo Aranci sits on the Gallura granite batholith, the same pink-grey rock that surfaces across the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena archipelago. Granite weathers into coarse quartz sand rather than silt, and quartz does not cloud.
